Shelby pulled up the internet search engine and typed in fashion design schools in New York and Los Angeles. Several options pulled up. She looked up the fields of study that interested her. Visual Merchandising Director, Design Director, and Stylist were her top three. She examined the criteria for each. After careful consideration, she decided on stylist.

Her love for fashion influenced her decision. Making people look good was her passion. Shelby reflected on her history in fashion. As a teenager she used her sisters for practice. She laughed at the thought of sneaking into her mother’s room while she was at work and borrowing her wigs. She would put wigs on each sister and style multiple outfits for them to model. Sheena would always complain about the outfits she picked for her. Shanelle and Shaunice didn’t care. They were happy to be models.

Shelby regretted not pursuing a career in the fashion industry immediately following high school. Although she would never admit it openly she held a measure of resentment in her heart towards her mother. She wondered if her mother could have done more to save her marriage with their father. With her mother being single it was left up to Shelby to look after her sisters. The ten-year age difference between her and her youngest sister pushed her further behind. By the time they got old enough to fend for themselves, Shelby figured her window of opportunity had closed.

With each passing year, Shelby saw her dream slipping further and further away. She had almost given up until she met Christian. Her life had become so routine that she didn’t focus on what she wanted anymore. She jumped on the hamster wheel and settled. Being around Christian made her want to dream again. It was time for her to leave Bethany behind.
